Designed an interactive dashboard analyzing wildfire data from 1881-2025 to support environmental research and decision-making.

Problem

Researchers face challenges in:

  • Analyzing long-term wildfire trends

  • Comparing data across regions

  • Interpreting multiple climate variables

Goal

Create a data visualization tool that:

  • Simplifies complex datasets

  • Enables efficient cross-country analysis

  • Supports data-driven insights

  • 140+ years of wildfire data

  • 13 countries

  • Variables: burned area, fire count, temperature, humidity, wind speed

Design Process

Initial Design: Basic charts and maps with focus on functionality.

User Feedback: Lacked novelty, limited interactivity, needed better readability.

Iteration & Improvements

  • Added tooltips for detailed insights
  • Refined chart types for clarity
  • Introduced a thematic color palette
  • Improved filtering for better comparisons

Outcome

  • Enhanced usability and engagement
  • Improved data interpretation efficiency
  • Enabled clearer cross-region comparisons

Reflection

Key Learning

Functionality alone is not enough—engagement matters. Visual hierarchy strongly impacts comprehension.

Product Thinking

Users need both overview + detail-on-demand. Iteration based on feedback is essential.

Ethical Consideration

Early data (1881-1950) relies on simulations. Transparency about data limitations is critical.
